How does Code Signing work?
Code Signing is done by affixing a digital signature to small part of software and then it is required to perform a one-way hashing process, this is required to monitor the integrity of the signed code. There are two main purposes for Code Signing:
• Asserting the publisher’s identity
• Checking for software compromise
It works in a simple way: upon completion of a piece of software or code, the publisher is required to use the certificate's private key to put on its own unique digital signature. Hashing of the signature and the software is done—this is one-way process where data of any length is plotted to a fixed length output called a hash value or digest.
When there is an attempt by internet user to download the signed software, validation of digital signature is done by use of PKI to ensure the signature is authentic. Same hash function will be performed that occurred during the signing and compare the values. If there has been any change with the signed code, even a small bit is altered, a complete different hash value will be produced. So, upon repeating the hashing step, if any two digits do not match, the software has clearly been tampered with. If they do match, the download will proceed as planned. All this will occur in milliseconds and behind the walls.
